The total value of building permits rose 14.8% to $7.7 billion in June, following a 13.9% decrease in May. The increase in June was mainly attributable to higher construction intentions for multi-family dwellings in Quebec, Alberta and Ontario, as well as institutional buildings in Alberta and commercial buildings in British Columbia.

Housing starts in Quebec were trending at 28,235 units in June, compared to 26,647 units in May, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The trend is a six-month moving average of the monthly seasonally adjusted annual rates (SAAR) of housing starts.

2015 SENIORS’ HOUSING SURVEY (PROVINCE OF QUEBEC)

According  to the latest survey conducted by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the vacancy rate for standard spaces remained relatively stable over the past year. The rate was measured at 7.3 per cent in February, compared to 7.5 per cent at the same time in 2014. The present rate is nonetheless lower than that of two years ago (8.7 per cent in 2013).

Canadian home sales edge lower but remain strong in June

The number of home sales processed through the MLS® Systems of Canadian real estate Boards and Associations declined by 0.8 per cent in June 2015 compared to May. Sales levels in May and June marked the strongest monthly readings in more than five years.

June sales were up from the previous month in about half of all local markets, led by increases in Hamilton-Burlington and in the Durham Region of the Greater Toronto Area. The monthly increase in sales there was offset by monthly sales declines in Ottawa and Montreal.

The total value of building permits fell 14.5% to $6.7 billion in May, following two months of double-digit gains. Declines were recorded in five provinces, led by Ontario, which had posted a notable increase the previous month.
