Statistical Facts about teh Elderly in the Region of Montreal

According to the regional statistical facts about Quebec’s elderly people revealed by the Quebec Association of Retirees from the Public and Semi-public sector (AQRP), the Montreal administrative region, in many instances, shows an a-typical situation. Its rate of elderly people living alone is very high. Its migratory deficit is also exceptionally elevated. Its revenue is the highest in the Province and its crime rate makes it one of the least safe regions for elderly people.

“- people 65 years and older (in 2001): 277 753;

  • % of people 65 years and older living alone (in 2001): 36 %;

  • annual median income of people 65 years and older (in 2000): 24 774 $;

  • % of people 65 years and older who consider their state of health acceptable or bad (in 2001): 28 %;

  • life expectancy at 65 (in 2001): 18.7 years;

  • number of crime victims among elderly people 65 years and older (in 2002): 541;

  • number of suicides among elderly people 65 years and older: 22. “
